Staff Spotlight: Claudette Martin
Claudette Martin
Regional Bridge Program Director, 38 years with Northern Human Services
Working at Northern Human Services has provided me with a purpose and gives me a sense of value in the world.
NHS: What do you like most about the work you do?
Claudette: Given my long tenure with Northern Human Services, I have had the opportunity to experience multiple job/roles…from direct care, case management, and coordination of residential care to my current role as a regional housing specialist, serving individuals with a developmental disability and a mental illness. Upon reflection, all of the roles I’ve held have had some commonality; being able to work directly with the individuals; influencing or supporting their choice; offering hope, stability; and providing sincerity of care.
NHS: In a few sentences, describe a typical (or non-typical!) day at work.
Claudette: Usually I ‘hit the pavement running,’ so to speak. There is never a dull moment. On any given day I prioritize, problem solve, make connections with individuals I am assisting and offer support/guidance. My days often include collaborating with treatment teams and outside resources.
NHS: What do you enjoy the most about being a part of Northern Human Services?
Claudette: Definitely the diversity of opportunities and job roles, the flexibility to manage my schedule, and sharing my knowledge with others.
NHS: What is an important lesson you have learned from working in human services?
Claudette: Learning to listen in order to see through the client’s lenses. Working at Northern Human Services has provided me with a purpose and gives me a sense of value in the world.
NHS: What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
Claudette: I enjoy spending time with family, my dog, and traveling.
